Shining Stars create!
Sunday, May 11, 2008 -
Who are these cuties, you might ask? Why, these are some very special friends of mine! Allow me to introduce to you - The Shining Stars! A good customer and friend, Katie Davis helps teach (along with Pam - Hi Pam!) a class of 4 year old preschoolers in North Carolina. (That happens to be a calling very near and dear to my heart because I also taught 4 yr pre-K for several years while my kids were small.)
Katie and I were talking on the phone several weeks ago and she mentioned that her students would be making necklaces for Mother's Day. Instantly, wheels began turning in my head. I talked to Tilly and we decided to donate my handmade lampwork beads to be used in the Shining Stars' necklaces. Tilly went through her bead stash and carefully selected several dozen favorite beads to send for the class to choose from. We then packed up and mailed the box to Katie in time for some Mother's Day jewelry-stringing fun.
A week or so later, Tilly and I received an envelope in the mail. Upon opening it, we discovered the sweetest note from Katie and HANDMADE "Thank You" notes from every single child in Katie & Pam's class! We were absolutely speechless with the preciousness of the drawings and sentiments inside each one. *sniff* (I'm tearing up just remembering!) You've got a super bunch of kids there, Katie! I thought we were doing a good deed for you in sending those beads, but after reading those sweet cards, I feel as though we were the ones who were blessed. THANK YOU!
And a VERY Happy Mother's Day to all the moms of the Shining Stars!

field day t-shirts - finished!
Friday, May 9 -
Have you been wondering where on Earth I've been this week? I've been tie-dyeing lots and lots of t-shirts!!!
With the help of Tilly and Dean, I tie-dyed 21 shirts for Elinor's class (there are obviously some students missing from Ella's class today!!) and 19 shirts for Davis' class. It was so much fun, but it'll be days before my hands, arms and parts of my torso (dye splash) no longer resemble a gangrenous Smurf!
Now I know a professional's shirts would've been perfect, but you should've seen these kids faces when they saw their shirts. THAT was perfection! I can't wait until next year so I can do it again!!
Anyway, now I've packed away my Procion, soda ash and artificial sinew and am back to my more mundane occupation of melting glass. Ha! I bet only a glass artist would think of playing with fire and molten glass as "mundane"...
